In 2015, we sent 17 young Mainers to sea aboard tall ships. This summer we sent 29, and we're already setting the bar higher for next year. Whether or not they can afford it, we're helping connect our local youth with the sea aboard these towers of sail.
Alongside the skills of leadership and team-building, sailing aboard these vessels offers teens an experience they can't get anywhere else. The very success of their time aboard -- their ability to reach their destination -- depends on how well they complete their tasks, how they look after their ship and shipmates, how they learn to become an effective and instrumental part of the big picture. Not only are we teaching the skills of sailing, but the skills of everyday life that help young adults along the way to becoming effective, contributing members of our community.
We have had immeasurable support from our community this year, and to each one of you we must extend our most heartfelt thanks; from students, parents, and volunteers, to the ships and crews, and our sponsors and donors. You have helped us build a program that will only continue to grow and aid the young people of Maine.

One of the biggest attractions from Tall Ships Portland 2015 returned to Portland where more than 6,500 visitors spent as much time as they wanted seeing that ship up close on board.
